Rattan furniture (5 frequently asked questions)

Rattan furniture is becoming a more and more popular choice for outdoor furniture.

It has a beautiful look that many people find appealing, and it's also very sturdy.

If you're considering rattan furniture for your garden, here are five frequently asked questions that will help you make the best decision.

1) Can rattan furniture be left outside all year?

Our rattan furniture can be left outside all year as it is UV and weather resistant. The aluminium frame of our rattan furniture is also coated in a weather resistant paint.

However, we recommend storing it inside or under a cover during wetter winter months to better extend the furniture’s life.

You should also bring cushions inside or cover them when the furniture is not in use.

2) Is wicker the same as rattan?

No. Rattan is a type of climbing palm plant that grows across Asia, Africa and Australasia.

It is used as a material in furniture production due to its light weight, pliable and durable properties.

Nowadays, there are many synthetic rattan materials available that offer greater whether resistance than natural rattan.

Wicker on the other hand is the technique of creating objects, including furniture from weaving fibres of flexible material. Think wicker baskets. Wicker can be made using a range of natural and synthetic materials including willow, cane, reeds and rattan.

3) Which is more durable wicker or rattan?

As mentioned previously wicker is not a material so cannot be compared to rattan, which is a material.

However, wicker furniture can be made using a range of materials like willow, cane and reeds.

These materials all have their own pros and cons. For example, reeds are more flexible than rattan.

However, when it comes to garden furniture rattan is superior due to its durability.

4) What is faux rattan?

Faux rattan is synthetic rattan that imitates the look of real rattan.

It is usually made from Polythene plastic and finished in a UV protective coating.

This material has by far the best weather durability making it ideal for outdoor furniture.

Synthetic rattan is also resistant to mould, unlike its natural alternative.
